The Fokker D.XXI was designed in 1935 as an affordable, sturdy, and easy‑to‑maintain fighter aircraft for the Dutch armed forces. It was operated by the Aviation Department of the Dutch Army, where it played an important role during the German invasion in May 1940. Of the 36 available aircraft, 28 were operational; within five days of fighting, they managed to shoot down several German aircraft, including Heinkel He 111 bombers and Junkers Ju 52 transport planes.

In addition to the Netherlands, the D.XXI was also used by Finland, where it built an impressive service record during the Winter War. But for Dutch model builders, its short yet heroic deployment in May 1940 remains a particularly meaningful piece of aviation history.
