The AS.42 Sahariana was an Italian reconnaissance vehicle designed for long‑range patrols in North Africa. Its concept was heavily inspired by the British LRDG vehicles, known for their endurance and flexibility in desert warfare. The Sahariana carried extra fuel, water, ammunition and a variety of weapons, including machine guns and light cannons. Its light weight and wide tires made it well‑suited for sandy and rough terrain.
After Italy’s surrender in 1943, the Sahariana was also used by German units, mainly for reconnaissance and fast‑moving raids, although it was relatively rare.
