The Unimog S 404 Ambulance was developed in the 1950s by Mercedes‑Benz and used by several NATO countries, including Germany, France and Belgium. With its reliable 4x4 drivetrain, high ground clearance and sturdy construction, the S 404 was well suited for medical evacuation, casualty transport and field hospital support. The ambulance variant provided extra space for stretchers, medical gear and personnel. The Dutch armed forces also operated Unimog S‑series trucks.
