The Universal Carrier, often called the “Bren Carrier”, was one of the most versatile and widely produced armoured vehicles of the Second World War. The Mortar Carrier variant was specifically adapted to transport a 3‑inch (81 mm) mortar along with ammunition and crew.

Unlike the standard Carrier, this version could deploy the mortar outside the vehicle or fire it from within the hull. This gave Allied forces a fast, mobile indirect‑fire platform capable of responding quickly to enemy positions.

The Universal Carrier Mortar Carrier was used for indirect fire support for infantry, rapid movement of mortar teams and offensive operations in Normandy, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Its speed, low profile and reliability made it a favourite among mortar crews.
