The FV4101 Charioteer was a British tank destroyer developed in the early 1950s by upgrading existing Cromwell tanks with a new turret mounting the powerful 20‑pounder gun. This gave the vehicle significantly improved anti‑tank capabilities during the early Cold War.
Although its British service life was short, the Charioteer became widely used abroad. It saw extensive action in the Middle East, particularly with Jordanian and Lebanese forces during the conflicts of the 1960s and 1970s. Its mobility and firepower made it effective in urban combat, mountainous terrain and as a fire‑support platform.
