The Lavochkin La‑5 was developed as a rapid successor to the LaGG‑3 and made its test flights in 1942; it was deployed in large numbers on the Eastern Front in 1942–1943. The La‑5 was distinguished by its powerful Shvetsov radial engine, rugged construction, and excellent low‑altitude maneuverability—qualities that made it effective against German fighters such as the Bf 109 and Fw 190. Around 10,000 aircraft of the La‑5/La‑7 family were produced in total.
