The assault on Pegasus Bridge was the very first Allied operation of D‑Day. In the early hours, gliders of the British 6th Airborne Division landed with remarkable precision right next to the bridge. Their mission: capture the bridges at Bénouville and Ranville intact to prevent German forces from launching counterattacks against Sword Beach. The accuracy of the nighttime glider landings remains one of the most impressive feats of airborne warfare.

The fighting around the bridge was fierce but brief. Thanks to the element of surprise, British troops quickly overwhelmed the German defenders. The bridge was secured and later named Pegasus Bridge after the emblem of the Airborne forces.
