The M31 was developed during World War II using the chassis of the famous M3 Lee tank. It was equipped with a powerful winch and an A frame crane that allowed crews to recover damaged tanks and other heavy vehicles from the battlefield. The United States Army operated the M31 in both the European and Pacific theaters, while several Allied nations also used it.
