The M3 Lee was developed in 1941 when the United States Army urgently needed a medium tank armed with a powerful 75 mm gun. Since a suitable turret design was not yet ready, the main gun was mounted in the hull. The tank served with the United States, Britain, Australia and the Soviet Union. It gained fame during the North African campaign, where it provided Allied forces with much needed firepower against German and Italian armored units. Although it was eventually replaced by the famous M4 Sherman, the M3 Lee played a vital role in the evolution of American tank design.
