The Renault R39 was an improved version of the Renault R35 light tank. Developed for the French Army in the late 1930s, it featured the more powerful 37mm SA38 gun to improve its anti armor capabilities. The vehicle saw service during the Battle of France in 1940. After the French surrender, a number of tanks were captured and reused by German forces. The rear mounted tail was designed to help the tank cross trenches and difficult terrain.
