The new German tanks posed a significant challenge for standard Sherman tanks. It would be some time before the M26 Pershing could enter mass production. The M4A3E2 was a specialized variant of the Sherman, nicknamed the "Jumbo." Based on the M4A3, it featured significantly thicker armor on its hull front and turret. It was capable of withstanding fire from large-caliber German tank guns and anti-tank guns. Later, it was upgraded with a 76mm main gun, providing improved anti-tank capabilities. In late December 1944, a "Jumbo" tank from the 4th Armored Division—part of the force under Patton's command—led a unit of U.S. soldiers to break through the German siege of Bastogne, linking up with the 101st Airborne Division. This operation turned the tide of the Ardennes
