The T-3 was based on the groundbreaking designs of American engineer J. Walter Christie. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, Christie developed a series of fast tanks that were far ahead of their time. The T-3 Medium Tank entered testing with the United States Army in 1931 and became known for its exceptional speed and innovative suspension system.

Although only a limited number were produced and the vehicle never entered large scale service, its influence on future tank development was enormous. The Soviet Union studied Christie technology extensively, leading to the development of the BT series and eventually the legendary T-34. The T-3 itself mainly served as a development and testing vehicle during the interwar period.
