The Crusader tank was one of the most important British cruiser tanks of the early Second World War. The Crusader Mk.I CS (Close Support) variant replaced the standard 2‑pounder gun with a 3‑inch howitzer, designed to fire smoke and high‑explosive rounds in support of infantry and armoured formations.

Unlike the gun‑tank version, the CS model provided essential battlefield utility: laying smoke screens, suppressing enemy positions and offering direct fire support during fast‑moving desert operations. The Crusader series was renowned for its speed, agility and low silhouette, perfect for the wide‑open terrain of North Africa. Although lightly armoured, its mobility made it a favourite among crews.

The Crusader Mk.I CS saw action in the North African campaign (1941–1942), operations of the British Eighth Army and armoured offensives such as Operation Crusader.
