Background information

The T-80 is one of the most important Russian battle tanks (MBT), designed and manufactured in the former Soviet Union.

The T-80 was a development of the T-64, which entered service in 1976. It was the first production tank to be equipped with a gas turbine engine for main propulsion. The T-80U was last produced at a factory in Omsk, Russia, while the T-80UD and the further developed T-84 were produced in Ukraine.

The T-80 and its variants are in service in Belarus, Cyprus, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Russia, South Korea, and Ukraine. The T-80B received a new turret, fire control, an autoloader for firing 9M112-1 Kobra anti-tank guided missiles and improved composite armor. An improved 1100-hp engine was added in 1980, a new gun in 1982 and the T-80BV received reactive armor in 1985. Reactive armor provides protection against an equivalent of 400mm shells to HEAT warheads.
