The 917T Maultier (“Mule”) was a German half‑track truck developed during the Second World War to overcome the severe mobility problems faced on the Eastern Front. Mud, snow and poor road conditions made standard trucks nearly useless. The solution was simple yet ingenious: fitting a tracked rear suspension onto existing truck chassis, including the Ford 917T.

The result was a vehicle that was cheaper and faster to produce than full halftracks, while still offering vastly improved off‑road performance. The 917T Maultier was used to transport ammunition, supplies, medical equipment and occasionally served as an improvised artillery tractor.

The 917T Maultier saw service on the Eastern Front (Stalingrad, Ukraine, Belarus), mainly in harsh winter operations where wheeled trucks failed.
