Sainte‑Mère‑Église became the first French town liberated by American forces during Operation Overlord. In the early hours, hundreds of paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division landed around the village. Strong winds and scattered drops caused many soldiers to land directly in the town, resulting in chaotic fighting between U.S. paratroopers and German garrison troops.
The village is famous for the story of John Steele, the paratrooper who became stuck on the church tower while the battle unfolded below him. This Italeri set captures the atmosphere perfectly: close‑quarters combat, nighttime landings and the first crucial steps of the Allied advance into Normandy.
