History
The 7.5 cm Pak 40 (7.5 Panzerabwehrkanone 40) was an anti-tank gun and formed the backbone of German tank defenses during the later years of World War II.
This weapon was developed as a response to the Soviet T-34 and the KV-1. Existing anti-tank guns, such as the Pak 38 and Pak 39, were insufficient to inflict damage on the heavily armored Soviet tanks. Production began in early 1942.
The Pak 40 was primarily used by the Wehrmacht. It could penetrate 97mm thick armor at a range of 1,000 meters, but due to equipment shortages, sometimes few were available to troops. Germany also supplied large numbers to its allies. However, some abandoned guns were also acquired by the Red Army, for example. After the end of the war, Pak 40 guns were still in service in European countries such as Bulgaria, Finland, Hungary, and Norway.
A total of approximately 23,500 Pak 40s were produced as anti-tank guns, and over 6,000 were built to arm tank destroyers.
