History
The Dodge WC series includes a very large number of light 4x4 and medium-duty 6x6 military wheeled vehicles, produced during World War II by Dodge/Fargo. Dodge was already part of Chrysler Corporation at that time, but contracts for light commercial vehicles and trucks (including with the US government) were also often concluded under the Fargo trade name.
The WC model designation stands for:
W: for the year the series received the order for mass production: 1941
C: for the payload class at that time: a 1/2 ton (-450 kg) on unpaved surfaces.
The WC code also remained in use for the production years 1942 through 1945, and also while the 3/4 ton versions and the 1.5 ton 6x6 Dodge were being produced from April 1942 onward.
Half-ton Ambulances
The ambulance variants (Wc-9, WC-18, and WC-27) were in production from 1941 to early 1942 and were specifically designed to serve as military ambulances. These early variants were distinguished from later ones by a curved radiator grille, while later ones (from the WC-51 onward) had a flat grille. These versions had a longer wheelbase of 123 inches (3,100 mm).
