The Sd.Kfz. 251 Nebelwerfer variant was a special adaptation of the well‑known German halftrack. The Nebelwerfer was originally designed as a smoke‑projecting weapon, but quickly evolved into a feared rocket artillery system capable of delivering devastating salvos over long distances. From 1941 onward, it was deployed on multiple fronts, including the Eastern Front, North Africa and later Western Europe.

Mounting the Nebelwerfer on the Sd.Kfz. 251 provided greater mobility and flexibility, allowing German forces to reposition quickly and launch surprise attacks. The rockets produced a distinctive howling sound, earning the nickname “Screaming Mimi” among Allied troops.
