The Sd.Kfz. 251/17 Ausf. D was a dedicated pioneer variant of the well‑known German halftrack. Introduced from 1943 onward, it served with Wehrmacht combat engineer units responsible for building bridges, clearing obstacles, removing mines and creating safe passages for infantry and armored formations.

The variant carried additional tools, explosives, assault ladders and other essential equipment for these dangerous missions. Its halftrack layout allowed it to traverse mud, snow and rough terrain, which was vital during operations on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.
