The M192 was the standard launcher for the American MIM-23 HAWK air defense system, serving as the launch platform for HAWK surface-to-air missiles for several decades. Mounted on a trailer, the launcher could hold three MIM-23 guided missiles in a state of readiness for firing. It was a key component of HAWK air defense batteries operated by the U.S. Army, the U.S. Marine Corps, and numerous NATO nations, including the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr).

The launcher featured hydraulic drive systems for azimuth and elevation adjustments, though it lacked its own radar or independent fire-control capabilities. Target acquisition and tracking were handled by the HAWK battery’s radar units, while the M192 automatically oriented the missiles toward the calculated intercept point. The semi-active radar-guided HAWK missiles were then employed against aircraft and other aerial targets at medium range.

A typical HAWK battery consisted of several M192 launchers, integrated with search and fire-control radars as well as reloading vehicles to form a highly capable air defense system. Reloading was carried out using specialized transport and loading vehicles, each capable of mounting three missiles onto the launcher simultaneously.

Throughout the Cold War, the M192 underwent several upgrades to accommodate different generations of HAWK missiles; however, its fundamental design remained largely unchanged for decades. As the HAWK system was replaced by more modern air defense platforms, the M192 was gradually phased out of service. Nevertheless, it remained in use in some countries for a long time and continues to be one of the most well-known air defense launchers in NATO history.
