The Elefant heavy tank destroyer was developed from the chassis originally designed by Ferdinand Porsche for the Tiger(P) tank; it was configured as a heavy tank destroyer and armed with the powerful 8.8 cm PaK 43/2 anti-tank gun. Following its initial combat deployments—most notably during the Battle of Kursk in 1943—many of the vehicles underwent modifications. These visible changes included the addition of a hull-mounted machine gun, a commander’s cupola, and various other detailed improvements. Later versions also featured a modified rear section, including a split rear hatch that provided easier access to the fighting compartment. While the Elefant was considered an exceptionally potent tank destroyer, its high weight and complex mechanical systems resulted in limited mobility and significant maintenance requirements.
