The T-72AMT is a Ukrainian modernization of the Soviet-era T-72A, developed by the Kyiv Armored Plant starting in 2017. The program emerged directly from operational experience gained in the Donbas region from 2014 onwards, with the goal of cost-effectively upgrading aging T-72 stocks held in storage for use as a strategic reserve. Following rigorous state testing, serial deliveries to the Ukrainian Armed Forces began in 2020. In the wake of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, production was pragmatically adapted, leading to simplified, field-expedient modifications where hard-to-source pre-war components were replaced with available alternatives.
Technically, the AMT upgrade significantly enhances this 1980s-era tank across all core capabilities. The firepower of its 125mm smoothbore gun is augmented by the 1K13-49 sighting system, which enables the firing of the Ukrainian-made, laser-guided "Kombat" anti-tank missile at ranges of up to five kilometers. Furthermore, the crew benefits from modernized night-vision equipment and a 12.7mm remote weapon station mounted on the commander’s cupola—operated from within the vehicle—which provides effective protection for the commander during combat.
The protection of the approximately 47-ton tank has been enhanced through the extensive installation of Ukrainian "Nizh" (Knife) reactive armor, supplemented by cage armor at the rear, designed to defeat modern tandem-charge warheads and RPGs. Mobility is provided by a more powerful 840 hp V-84-1 diesel engine, which—in this pre-war variant—is paired with the wider tracks of the T-80. The modernization is rounded out by up-to-date electronics: a rearview camera assists the driver with maneuvering, while satellite-based navigation and encrypted, NATO-compatible digital radios (including units from Aselsan) ensure effective command and control in modern combined-arms warfare.
