The Volkswagen Typ 82 Kübelwagen was developed by Ferdinand Porsche and entered production in 1940 for the German armed forces. Lightweight, reliable, and easy to maintain, it became one of the most successful military utility vehicles of the war. The DAK version served extensively in Libya, Egypt, and Tunisia during the North African campaign from 1941 to 1943. Used by the forces of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, the Kübelwagen carried officers, communications personnel, reconnaissance teams, and supplies across vast stretches of desert terrain.
Despite lacking four wheel drive, its low weight and innovative design gave it impressive off road capability. More than 50,000 examples were built during the war. Following the conflict, surviving vehicles found service in several European countries.
The combination of the famous Typ 82 design and its connection to the North African campaign makes the DAK version especially attractive to historians and model builders alike.
