The M577 was developed during the 1960s as a command vehicle based on the highly successful M113 armored personnel carrier. The United States Army required a mobile and protected command post capable of supporting battlefield communications and operational planning. The improved M577A1 version featured a more powerful engine and various technical upgrades. The vehicle served extensively throughout the Cold War and was adopted by numerous NATO countries, including Germany, Italy, Belgium, Greece, and others.

The Dutch armed forces also operated M577 command vehicles for many years within mechanized and armored infantry formations. Thanks to its reliability, large working space, and adaptability, the M577A1 remained in military service for decades and became one of the most recognizable command vehicles used by Western armed forces.
