The M113 was developed in the United States during the late 1950s as a lightweight armored personnel carrier and entered mass production in 1960. It quickly became one of the most widely used armored vehicles in military history. During the Vietnam War, crews required additional protection against enemy fire, leading to the development of the ACAV, or Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle, configuration. This variant featured shielded machine guns and enhanced battlefield protection. The M113 and M113A1 served with dozens of countries, including the United States, Australia, South Vietnam, Germany, Belgium, Canada, and the Netherlands. The Dutch armed forces introduced the M113 during the 1960s and operated numerous variants for many decades within mechanized infantry and support units. Due to its versatility, reliability, and adaptability, the M113 family became one of the most important armored vehicle designs of the twentieth century.
