The Achilles was developed during World War II when British forces sought greater firepower to counter advanced German tanks such as the Panther and Tiger. The vehicle was based on the American M10 Tank Destroyer but was upgraded with the highly effective British 17 pounder anti tank gun. The Achilles IIC designation referred to vehicles built on the diesel powered M10 platform.
Entering service in 1944, the Achilles was used by British, Canadian, and other Allied forces throughout Northwest Europe. It saw action during the Normandy Campaign, Operation Market Garden, and the final push into Germany. Its combination of mobility and firepower made it one of the most successful Allied tank destroyers of the war.
